I am gonna agree with the other reviewers - wish Maxpedition had been around when I was in Army...and it DOES make a great little "possiblities" pouch.
My M-2 stays fully packed at all times and takes turns riding in or attached to whatever pack or briefcase I have going that day. It's like the "survival kit in an altoids tin" I guess, except I got to fill this with stuff I know/like/trust/have used...and it has more carry options.
THe M-2 carries all I'd need to "make it" in a pinch if I have to. Firesteel, compass, emergency blanket, duct tape, whistle, emergency fishing kit, flashlight, spare batteries, tylenol, first aid items, tiny sharpie and a few cards to write on. Small fixed blade knife, small folder, I have an inkpen and a paracord lanyard in the pen slots, etc...you get the idea - just tons of stuff. I packed and repacked this M-2 countless times until I feel confident I can live out of it. As a solo-tripper on my canoe outings, I take everything about this pack very seriously, my life may very well depend on it.
I wear this around my waist as a "ditch kit" if I am dumped out of my canoe and separated from my stuff. It's small enough to never get in my way and I just move it from pack to pack or briefcase as need be in my everyday life. It's my own 'comfort level' to have it all in one place. The stiching is so strong I know it will never break off my belt or pack strap, etc..
No matter what you decide to use this (or any Maxpedtion product) for...I bet you'll like it.
The M-2 itself: Great YKK zippers. Tough 1000 denier nylon, lots of great internal pocket options, 2 external pen slots. The outside pouch holds my blackberry curve (for your size reference only - that pocket is where I keep my duct tape wrapped around business cards and my emergency blanket.) Can be slid on a belt or rope or pack stap and also has Molle Attachments on back.
oh yeah - there's a secret compartment on the back by the Molle too - very nice place to stick a $20 or something for emergency cash.

This maybe redundant, but I have ordered other Maxpedition products before and I am very pleased with the workmanship, price, and options avaiaible!
I wish they had been around when I served in the Army - would have made carrying my field gear much easier!

Great sturdy waistpack. I'm using it for a belt survival pouch and it can hold just about all the essentials. Not as much room as the M-1 obviously, but still a good size.
