Bag appearance matches photos well. Pockets and compartments are pretty neat. Main compartment does not have a zipper perhaps to save room, which worries me a bit. Time will tell is this con is really all so menacing. I was nervous the bag might be too small for my books, but after a trial run there is substantial space. It's about the same size as my bag last year, which was your standard messenger bag.. Also, the reason this bag got 4 stars instead of 5 is that on the PLAYA bag, the strap is NOT distressed leather as advertised. I personally prefer the cloth one it comes with, but this was false advertising.
Oh, and there's a cool eagle patch on the shoulder strap!

I spent a long time looking for the right messenger bag, I've purchased some pretty bad ones. This one has worked great, although after 6 months of use, it's showing some wear. That's not a bad thing, pretty soon I can call it "vintage."
It has lots of pockets and places to put gadgets. One of the patches fell off pretty quickly, the black is starting to fade on the back. All things considered, this is still the best messenger bag I've purchased.

I've had mine for over two years. It's still alive and hasn't chipped on the shoulder strap. Lots of pockets and roomy inside. It is cloth though, so don't expect it to keep its shape when nothing big is inside.

I bought this as a laptop bag that would hold some additional books and papers. I find it awkward. When you open the flap to access the laptop you need to be sure the outer pocket is closed, or everything falls out of the pocket. Also, items in the pocket tend to gather at the top. As you place items in the bag it stretches the pocket outward and items in the pocket get pushed to the top. If I were buying again I think I would look for a more traditional laptop bag with an opening at the top and outrigger pockets with a messenger strap.

I have this bag for almost a year. Still in great condition and use it 5 days a week to lug my latop back and forth to work. It is a great minimilist minded bag but also can expand to hold a binder or a few books. It certainly keeps me from being a pack rat. Only one negative thing i can say is that wish it had a handle on the flap. Grabbing it out my car can be difficult.

I carried this bag all over the British Isles and found that it had pockets for everything I could imagine needing. (I was in charge of several teenagers and had to keep records and various other items readily available.) The only way it could be better is if it could easily be converted into a backpack for even distribution of weight during longer trips. Otherwise, it is spectacular!

I bought this bag primarily to bike commute to work. I had shopped around for a couple weeks looking for the "perfect" commuter bag, and this one met most of my criteria. First of all, it has an external water bottle pouch, a padded back, a waist belt, and a padded shoulder strap. The organizer is straightforward and durable. The laptop area is well-padded and secure. There is plenty of room for a change of clothes, shoes, and lunchbag. The soft velvety ipod pockets will keep your cell phone or electronics safe from scratches. The only thing it is lacking is any type of reflective material to draw motorist's eyes to a cylcist, but I plan to add my own. Overall, it is an excellent bag. I did buy mine on closeout, so it was a super deal as far as money spent. I bought it in Large, and it still fits my 5'3" frame very comfortably. I would definitely recommend this bag to anyone who wanted a comfortable, durable, convenient bike commuter bag.

"Big, but not heavy duty" 2009-10-23

Like another reviewer, my bag broke while it was loaded, and I was trucking along. I packed a textbook, 16oz H20, 16oz coffee, and a Dell Precision M6400 with power brick and mouse. It fits, but the plastic clips that attach the bag to the shoulder strap are crap. One broke under the load and I found out something else. While the back panel is padded to protect your humongous laptop, the edges are not padded. So when the bag decided to free fall, it landed on the corner of my laptop. So far, the only damage to the laptop is a dented corner. The laptop corner actually cut through the bag's canvas, and so there is a cut on the bottom of the bag now. The dent is bad enough that I almost soiled myself when I saw it. To Dell's credit, the laptop seems to be functional.
Thanks a lot High Sierra, for cheaping out on the most mechanically critical part of this bag. If they would have used a better resin, or even metal like a carabiner, this would not have happened.

I ordered this bag to switch for an everyday pack to lug my laptop and various things to work. I am very impressed with the quality of this bag. Zippers are heavy duty and seal to keep out water. There are pockets for everything. I especially like the zippered pocket on the side with holds my power brick, mouse, and a couple of other wires. The mesh pocket on the side does a great job holding my water bottle for quick access. It is a very roomy bag which can carry all my stuff for work plus my lunch and some workout stuff. A great bag for a professional on the go.

I am a grad student who always carries a laptop along with several books and notebooks. I've had a tough time finding a good laptop carrier that could also much of anything else -- most were too inflexible to hold more than one or two thinner books. This bag puts the laptop into a stiffer rear compartment and has a larger space available for other books, chargers, and anything else you might need. There is also an organizer and several smaller pockets located around the front of the bag, making it easy to carry most things. One additional note about the laptop holder is that it has a sleeve-like opening for holding papers that you need to keep their shape.
On the whole, I think this is a great bag. I should warn you that this is a big bag. If you don't need to carry a laptop plus a fair amount of other materials, I wouldn't recommend one this size. Also, I have only had this for a month -- not nearly enough time to comment on its durability. That being said, the bag does seem to be well-built.
