I started using the larger Proteus waistpack to carry all my gear around quite a few years ago, but found it to be a bit to large for my gear needs (unless I was carrying a handgun in it) and was a bit too noticeable due to it's size (I wear waistpacks in front, which I refer to as a my "gunbag", and my significant other refers to as my "purse"...grrrr!). I've found that this location attracts much less attention in public than a shoulder bag such as the Fatboy or a drop bag like the Thermite.
I picked up the Octa as soon as they came out and found the smaller size and cut to be perfect for my gear load, worn in "gunbag" style. While it will hold almost all my gear (Max Wallet, keys, 2 Blackberries, writing pad and pen, C2 Taser, 5" folding knife, P3D flashlight, FoxLabs 2oz Pepperspray), The pepperspray is a bit too fat to join all the rest of my gear so I have mounted on the belt via a Bladetech kydex pouch.
I picked up a second Octa to use as a dog walking harness/kit (3 dogs) and it works well, except that the plastic connectors which hold the belt onto the bag snapped off when my 75lb American Bulldog "Tyson" lunged at another dog in passing. I had my local shoe repair guy sew the strap ends directly onto the bag-ends and now the kit is dog proof.
If you are looking for a CCW solution, I am able to get a 3" Springfield XD40 into the main compartment without too much trouble, but I wouldn't want to try anything larger since getting it out in a hurry could be a problem.

Like all Maxpedition products, this pack is well made, durable and exactly as it is advertised. I have many Maxpedition and other companies tactical equipment and believe that the Maxpedition line holds up as well as or better than all of the others. They are not cheap, but I would avoid any product that was cheap. When it comes to equipment, you should only buy what you need and it should be the best you can afford.
