Slumberjack Big XL Cot

Product Description

Big XL Cot - the name says it all! This extra large cot comfortably sleeps campers up to 6'8" and 300 lbs. The "no squeak" aluminum frame with steel reinforced end bars reduces cot movement and eliminates noise, to let you sleep better. Store your gear in the storage loft attached under the cot so it is always close at hand. A carry bag is included to maximize the convenience of transport and storage.

These cots (I bought 3), are the most sturdy cots I've seen. Brilliantly designed from the folded up state inside the canvas tote, to the completely set up state; tight surface; no sagging, sturdy, no squeaking, etc. I highly recommend this product. Slumberjack Cot by Slumberjack.

This cot is very heavy. Set-up is straight forward: just fold out the legs and attach the two end bars. Attaching the end bars is truly a feat of strength as the surface of the cot is very taunt when assembled. The best thing is that this cot is very comfortable and doesn't wiggle or squeak. It is big, though, taking up about 1/3 of my 8 person tent. It also sits pretty high off of the ground. Be sure to measure your tent carefully to see if the cot will fit. I like it for my size tent and the type of camping my family does, but if you have a small tent or are not very strong you will want to look at a different cot.

Nice cot but would not recommend if you are looking for one that will be used alot.

I own a bunch of Sluberjack gear and have always been very satisfied with it. Thus, when it came time to buy a cot, this seemed like a no brainer. At the same time I ordered this I ordered a Rio cot for half the price that I figured would be for the kids.

The first thing you will notice about this cot, before you even take it out of the box, is that this sucker is heavy. Do not even think about backpacking with this puppy, it may weigh as much as all of your other gear combined.

The pros are that this is a much larger cot than you typically find. The added space would indeed make it much more cofortable. It also sits a lot higher than a typical cot and the storage are is defintely a cool feature. So, what's not to love?

I read some other reviewers who said they had difficulty assembling this or that they could not assemble it at all. I figured they must be kids or frail elderly folk. I apologize, I was wrong.

After unfolding I attached the first crossbar. This required some stretching, although not a huge amount. What did strike me is that the way the bar fits over the pins does not feel all that secure. They just do not have a good click and lock feel to them.

The second crossbar is where the real fun begins. All 6', 200+ pounds of me by myself could not get this cover even close to stretched enough to fit the pins. At one point I am on the ground, pushing the end of the cross-bar with my foot while hanging on for dear life when the first side lets loose and I go flying (ouch). In the end, it took three grown adults doing all sorts of contortions to get this thing together. I will leave it assembled for the next 24 hours to see if it stretches to make future assemble easier. If not, back to Amazon it goes.

Oh yes, now that it is assembled, I can also report that it has a lot more movement (head to foot direction) than the much less expensive Rio. I suspect this has to do with the tall legs. The Rio went together easily and seems nice and sturdy. The one end of the rio attaches via a velcro wrap around so you do not have to use a truck to stretch the fabric.

Slumberjack, you let me down with this product. Good thing Amazon has such great return policies.

I bought this for my daughter. She tells me the bed is very very nice but she does not have the strength to pull the canvas over the frame to put it together and this is something she will be doing herself. My daughter is very athletic, runs marathons, bike in Dalmack hundreds of miles so this is apparently not an easy to assemble cot. We are now looking for another to make an exchange for. I will be talking with you soon. Your customer service has been above excellent.

I bought this for use at home when company comes to visit, not for camping. I bought the XL because I thought, "Why be cramped in bed at home?"

Wow! This sucker is huge! As wide as a twin bed, and even longer.

Yes, its heavy: not for backpacking unless you're taking a mule, but would work for car camping.

Yes, its big: won't work in an RV, nor in most small footprint tents. This needs to be in one of those huge 10 person tents, or in your living room after you move the coffee table.

Yes, it takes a bit of pull to connect the end rods: The Slumberjack cots and one's of similar design get their rigidity from a brace at each end, which also stretches the canvas. Connecting the rod on one end is pretty easy, assuming you have it right-side-up in the sleeve. The other end though.. you fight a lot of tension in two directions, but I found after getting one end of the brace popped on, it just takes a knee on the x-brace and pushing down on the rail, and you can pop the end brace right on.

Yes, it sleeps well: especially with a blanket or sleeping pad under you. Heavier people will sag more than on a narrower cot, simply because there's more fabric to stretch. But it is firm, and will support you safely and comfortably.

After several nights of having large family members sleeping on it and putting it away each morning, I popped one of the feet off while trying to unfold it. The "hold-on" screw had pulled through the rubber, apparently it had snagged itself. But I pushed the foot back on, and it has remained, even after skootching it around on the carpet.

But boy, is it big!

Just got this cot yesterday, and I have mixed feelings about it. The length and width are great, but I have serious concerns about the construction. Anyone who has slept on a military issue cot of this style (I slept on one in Iraq for 11 months) knows they are built like rocks. But this cot wobbles forward and backward in a very disconcerting way. The brackets on the joints are undersized, and I think that is what leads to the instability. Secondly, the connectors for the endpoles are of a style (kinda like a dovetail joint) that is very likely to break during normal use (assembly and disassembly in particular). Army cots have a much better ball and socket type joint between the side and end poles. Lastly, this sucker is HEAVY. I'm talking like four or five times what it should weigh. Which makes me boggle even more at the wobbliness of it.

Overall, I think the poles are well constructed, but the joints are weak. Maybe a redesign is in order. But if you're careful not to put any forward/backward stress on the cot, I think it ought to hold out for a while. I'm 6' tall, so I've always hated the old 75" army cots for being too short for me (head and heals hit the end poles), but I'm going to return the slumberjack and get one of the issue cots instead. Proof that there is a reason that the army buys what it buys.

This cot is exactly as described...extra large. I'm 6'3" and weigh about 280 lbs. and its very comfortable for me. Good for use as a temporary extra bed at home and I have taken it car-camping. It is big and it is heavy, but that's ok as long as you expect it. I read that some people have a hard time with set-up. I can understand the comment but I didn't have much trouble. The cot does support you with tension so it makes sense that you have to stretch the fabric a bit to lock in the end rails. All in all I'm very satisfied with the product and look forward to using it for a long time.

this cot appears to be sturdy. i padded it with numerous quilts and y guests have said that it is very comfortable.

Customer Buzz
I only layed on the cot for a couple hours and found it comfortable. A friend used it for 3 nights and found it comfortable as well. It is very large. It takes up most of any room. It is also hard to assemble. I was able to get only one of the end bars in place. It seemed to work fine without it. Overall I am pleased with the purchase.
